Dentist in the Evanston area for solicitous patient

Dentist in the Evanston area for solicitous patient
Added: February 22, 2008 - 5:28 AM
By: Patient Email Withheld, Evanston, IL
Need Dentist / Specialist: Yes
Provide Cost Estimate: No
X-rays Available: No
Case Summary
Exam & Consultation Filling Root Canal Broken Tooth Crown Porcelain Veneers / Crowns Extractions / Oral Surgery
Teeth: 1,18,19,31,32
Last Full Mouth X-Ray: 2005
Last Cleaning: 2005
Case Description
I have a cavity in tooth '18' that was filled without being completely drilled, so the cavity continued to work away beneath the filling, eventually causing the filling to fall out. It now periodically causes mild discomfort. I also have a cavity in tooth '17' that is not as severe. Tooth '30' has a fractured crown that resulted from a cavity.

The wisdom teeth '0' and '31' on my right side are coming in at an irregular angle and need to be removed.

I am looking for a primary dentist in the Evanston area who can address these problems. I have a sulfite allergy, and so the preservative often used for the epinephrine which accompanies anesthetics is a problem for me. I have had dentists in the past who are unfamiliar with this sort of allergy to the point of denying it would be an issue, so my chiefest concern is finding a dentist who will be mindful of this. I also have a penicillin allergy and am on a low dosage of beta blockers. Lastly, I have chronic sinusitis which results in a lot of post-nasal drip [even after preventative use of nasal sprays], and I am self-conscious about this causing gagging in a longer dental procedure.

I have no anxiety relating to going to the dentist in general, but the above issues make me worry about being a bad patient. Are there any dentists in the area that would be patient enough to happily work with me? A dentist that will take the Aetna Individual PPO Dental [even better if they also take my partner's Aetna DMO] would be ideal.

Thank you so much.

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

I''''m an oral surgeon and therefore could help you with any extractions, but am not a member of the Aetna PPO network. We do participate in the Aetna DMO network, but you would need to be referred by a general dentist.

Regarding the sulfa allergy. Sulfa is an antibiotic. The preservative in local anesthetic with epinephrine is a sulfite. The words are similar sounding, but they are very different. Allergy to sulfa does not mean allergy to sulfites. You should find out whcih you are allergic to. Sulfites are often used as a preservative at salad bars and so if you have a sulfite allergy that could be a concern.

Hello. I am a general dentist located and would be willing to see you as a patient. I will be very attentive to your concerns regarding the use of local anesthetics, your allergies, and other medical conditions. I am not part of the Aetna PPO or DMO networks, but have many patients who have Aetna PPO coverage. We will work with your Aetna PPO insurance, and submit the claims. I would be unable to accept Aetna DMO coverage, since you would need to select a primary provider within that plan.

Thank you for your inquiry, and please contact our office. We look forward to meeting you.
